For those  preoccupied by odors, there’s a new trend that’s sweeping the mattress market – activated bamboo charcoal. It’s too early to tell if it will catch on permanently or if it’s a clever marketing ploy. Bamboo charcoal isn’t exactly a new concept. It’s been an ingredient in items ranging from skin care products, medications and aquarium filters to deodorizers for gym bags, refrigerators and diaper pails.

The bamboo charcoal in mattresses is meant to provide a natural way to absorb moisture from sweat, eliminate odors from normal wear and tear, and regulate body temperature. Memory foam mattresses infused with bamboo charcoal are considered hybrids and there are typically two styles.

One is an open cell mattress type, with pockets of air to facilitate air flow and ventilation. The other type features a top layer of bamboo charcoal and can also be found in traditional inner spring mattresses. Both are considered hybrids, which affects price. There are also charcoal-infused mattress toppers. Bamboo charcoal is said to function in much the same way as gel-infused mattresses for cooling sleepers.

Bamboo is a type of fast-growing grass with some interesting properties. It’s naturally resistant to mold, bacteria, and fungi. It’s also hypoallergenic, aids in repelling dust mites, and is a sustainable resource. Bamboo charcoal is porous, giving it 10 times the absorption rate of ordinary charcoal.

Transforming bamboo into charcoal is typically achieved through chemical processes instead of mechanical. Chemically created bamboo charcoal isn’t a sustainable process, nor eco-friendly, and exposes the bamboo charcoal to dangerous chemicals.

Individuals should shop for a bamboo charcoal-infused mattress with care. Mattresses still contain a variety of other materials in their construction. Instead of a mattress infused with bamboo charcoal, a bamboo charcoal-infused mattress topper may be a better alternative for many people, and more cost effective.
