New materials and technology have affected the mattress market in multiple ways. There are mattresses that “hug” the body and align the spine. Nowhere is the competition fiercer than in the arena of cooling mattresses. According to the Sleep Foundation, the average person sleeps best at 65° F. That can be a difficult goal for individuals with sleep partners that prefer warmer temperatures.
There are brands of cooling mattresses that successfully disperse heat away from the body and keep sleepers cool. However, not all mattresses that claim to be cooling actually deliver on that promise. While some brands do add materials to the construction that aid in regulating body heat, they don’t actually cool, but will be cooler than a traditional innerspring mattress.
When purchasing a cooling mattress, there are some materials that work better than others. The following are the most effective, in no particular order.
Cooling Fibers
Some brands incorporate fibers into the mattress cover that actually make it feel cool to the touch. It’s the same type of fabric technology used in clothing that redistributes heat.
Infused Foam
There are different types of memory foam-infused mattresses. They absorb body heat and redistribute it throughout the mattress. Infusion materials include gel microbeads, graphite and copper.
Open Cell
These mattresses utilize a foam that contains tiny air bubbles throughout the material. It provides better airflow than traditional, denser types of foam.
Perforated
A perforated foam mattress uses a layer of latex foam with perforations throughout for better airflow. It promotes a more neutral sleeping temperature.
Proprietary Materials
Some mattress brands have developed their own proprietary materials. One of the most effective are mattresses that contain jelly-like materials that promote airflow and prevent the retention of heat.
Phase Change
Phase change materials (PCMs) are effective in making sleepers feel cooler by absorbing heat, which is a form of energy. PCMs can absorb a considerable amount of energy and release it to maintain a consistent temperature.
