How to Sell a Mattress Without Really Trying
Huge 35,000 sqft San Antonio mattress warehouse space and scattered all over the driveway so you don't have to wait!
Family Owned Since 1997
I am Billy Bob and I’m the owner of Billy Bobs Beds. I enjoy jogging, swimming, the beach, hot spicy food and vacationing in Latin American countries, especially Nicaragua.
I have a wonderful wife who runs the store with me. I have an 11-year-old son who was raised here at Billy Bobs Beds and his area still has Winnie the Pooh wallpaper. I sometimes save the world but mostly I am selling discount mattresses at Billy Bobs Beds, the finest mattress store west of the Mississippi.
Let me start at the beginning. In 1997, we decided to sell our house and downsize to a small condo. I had a bunch of furniture to sell so I put an ad in the San Antonio Express-News. I was flooded with telephone calls but most people were looking for mattresses. I got tired of getting these calls and it occurred to me that I should buy some mattresses wholesale and that perhaps I could sell them and make a bit of spending money.
I bought a few mattresses from a guy who owned a small mattress shop. To make a short story even shorter, it did not work. I took the mattresses back but the guy refused to give me a refund. I should have known better, even though he had promised to do so. He told me to leave the mattresses and he would try to sell them for me.
I took the mattresses back home and had no choice but to figure out what I had to do to sell them. I did. We moved into the condo and before I knew it, I was selling two truckloads of mattresses each month. This was working pretty well until I got a letter from the HOA telling me to stop selling mattresses or move out.
I got a small Mini Storage at Uncle Bobs Storage and the next thing I knew, I had 23 mini storage units and before long was selling up to ten truckloads per month. I would meet people on a corner by the gas station and lead them to the mini storage. I would always ask them, “Anybody follow you?” My motto and business card said, Ugly Store, Bad Service, Rude Salesman, Pay Toilets, Cheap Prices on Nice Mattresses. Needless to say, it worked!
Before long, I moved to my present location, 7350 Tezel Road, San Antonio, Texas 78250. I occupy 35,000 square feet. I receive five to ten truckloads of mattresses a week and sell them all. I have all the name brands from Beautyrest to Sealy Mattresses. I am the biggest memory foam mattress dealer in San Antonio because I price them so cheap. There is a not a single store in San Antonio that sells even a third of what I sell. All my customers are amazed at my prices. They all say, “how do you do it?” I always say the same thing, “I don’t have to get rich on every sale, like other dealers do.” I have a hundred different mattresses, bed frames and box springs on display. You can lay on them and check them out. If you’re cool I might even let you spend the night.
I sell the following brands: Sealy Posturepedic, Serta Perfect Sleeper, Serta iComfort, Sealy Optimum, Corsicana Bedding, Ashley, Golden Mattress, Stein & Richter and Simmons Beautyrest Mattresses. I also sell five times as many bed frames as any other dealer in San Antonio, I’ve got them opened and up on the ceiling so you can see what you are getting and my prices will blow your mind, if you have ever bought a bed frame. I also have special sized mattresses, made to order and carry in stock, mattresses for RVs, ¾ beds and all the extra long mattresses.
I sell box springs separately. Other stores hold you up when you just want a box spring. I do not. I am proud to say that I am Billy Bob and again, I don’t have to get rich on every sale.
Last year, I dedicated some space to furniture at the end of the building. The guy that runs this area is selling hundreds of truckloads in furniture annually – like Ashley bedroom sets, Ashley sofas and almost everything else that Ashley Furniture Industries sells. Like me, he does not have to get rich on each and every sale and he beats everybody’s prices. He must be doing something right to have sold so much his first year. Ashley is a very good brand. My wife has some Ashley bar stools and an Ashley dining room table and she loves them.
Getting back to the mattresses I sell here in San Antonio, Texas, let me tell you that every day, customers come in and can't believe my prices. Another thing I offer is my huge inventory of mattresses. My warehouse is always full of the best mattresses. You don't have to wait a week or two or drive to some warehouse on the outskirts of San Antonio for your mattress. I have them all right here. I can tie them on your car for you or deliver them same day for as little as $39 dollars.
Most of the police officers and federal agents in San Antonio sleep in Billy Bob’s Bed. From the beginning, I have always given big discounts to those who stand on the wall and let us sleep safe at night.
The South Texas shale oil business has been good to us. I buy so many mattresses that I can sell wholesale twin, king, and queen mattresses to the man-camps, apartments, and the hotel mattress needs of South Texas while beating everybody's price. My wholesale mattress business is getting better every day. These guys are buying 100 to 200 mattresses at a whack and since they sell so many, I just add on a little bit to my cost. I deliver these mattresses for free and make a lot of oil field workers super comfortable after a hard 12-14 hours work. Oil workers sleep in Billy Bob's top-of-the-line Sealy, Simmons, and Serta Beds and love it.
I'm not easy but I'm free and it's not easy being me. My sales have increased 6 fold in 15 years. No single mattress store location in Texas sells even half what I sell from my store. I attribute my success mainly to CREATIVITY and artistic implementation of my concepts, be it print media, outdoor advertising, radio or internet. Send me an email firstname.lastname@example.org and I'll be happy to share with you.
In closing here, I'll tell you that my wife and I run this store together and we are going to save you a fortune on a mattress, bed frame, or box spring that will make you late to work. By the way, service dogs are so welcome at Billy Bobs Beds.
